Our Sainsbury’s grocery website has 3-4 million visits per week, helping a diverse range of customers shop food for every occasion, delivered to their door or collected from their local store. It is not just the weekly shops; it’s planning food for special occasions, ordering urgent supplies and everything in between. At Sainsbury’s, our website and apps aim to inspire customers, while helping them to plan, order and receive their food however and whenever they want it.
What you'll do:
In this role, you will be part of an agile Digital Content & Experience team, delivering customer-first designs that support trading, marketing, and campaign objectives. You will be responsible for providing design direction, guidance, and continuous improvements to content across Sainsbury’s food website, apps, and email. Your goal will be to ensure that we deliver market-leading content design that meets customer needs and aligns with business goals.
As part of a small UK-based design team, you will collaborate closely with our design team in Mumbai, ensuring that offshore peers meet high design standards. Additionally, you will work alongside cross-functional teams—including Content, Optimisation, and XD—to ensure content is engaging, accessible, and consistent across all touch-points. By leveraging research, data, and testing, you will create solutions that enhance the customer journey, drive engagement, and ensure a seamless omnichannel experience.
What we’re looking for:
You should have at least 3 years of experience as a designer and be able to demonstrate strong digital design skills, thinking, and adherence to industry standards. You'll also need to showcase strong collaboration and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to apply creativity within overarching brand guidelines. The ideal candidate is proactive, adaptable, and thrives in a fast-paced, agile environment. Experience working in a cross-functional teams is desirable.
You’ll be able to demonstrate:
Digital design & visual communication - Strong graphic design skills, with the ability to develop and deliver visually appealing, user-friendly, and responsive designs for digital content. It would also be desirable to demonstrate supporting templates, design patterns, or guidance for wider team adoption.
Brand alignment - Ability to work within and build upon brand guidelines, incorporating digital principles and best practices.
Accessibility - An understanding of accessible digital design and its importance.
Coaching and development - Examples of skillset sharing: It would also be desirable to demonstrate experience in coaching and developing design peers, as well as managing adherence to design principles and guidelines.
Desirable, but not essential skills :
Data-led design for content - Understanding customer needs and behaviours through research, insights, and data, and translating these into user-centred content design that addresses those needs.
Designing omnichannel - It would be desirable to demonstrate experience in creating effective content for various channels, including app, web, and email, with a focus on delivering a cohesive experience across touch-points.
AI Design tools & software - It would be desirable to see any experience working with AI tools to enhance design solutions and customer experiences.
Interactive & Immersive design - It would be desirable to see experience in interactive media or 3D modelling.
Motion design - Experience in creating video content or working with motion graphics.
Agile ways of working - Experience participating in sprint planning, daily stand-ups, and retrospectives to ensure design deliverables align with project goals and timelines.
Software Skills
- Proficiency in using design tools within the Adobe Creative Suite, particularly Photoshop and Illustrator.
- Experience with interface design and prototyping tools such as Figma, Sketch, or Adobe XD.
- Familiarity with collaboration tools like Jira, Confluence, or Basecamp.
- Experience with analytics platforms such as Glassbox, Adobe Analytics or Google Analytics.
