Job Description:
THE OPPORTUNITY
Responsible for 5-10 book titles per season, while assisting on Manager’s projects. Delivers all stages of production for covers and interiors, adhering to schedules, meeting deadlines, and developing materials in a timely way. This is an apprenticeship role: observes how budgets and fees are negotiated. Prepares print-ready files and approves proofs with manager supervision.
The junior designer is given established series/titles to design where art selection/direction is executed by the manager. As skills develop within the role, opportunity increases to share their creative ideas for artist choices and direction. They can expand their design work under supervision of CD and manager. In initial project discussions with individual editors, the manager attends to oversee and support. In presentation meetings the manager presents
the junior designer’s projects while they observe.
Clear and effective communication is key to successful execution of all Designer roles, whether negotiating schedules and asset needs or delineating art revisions to an artist. The junior designer shares email drafts with manager prior to sending, as well. Manager guides the designer in learning to negotiate and manage communications.
Responsibilities
- Responsible for design/execution of 5-10 titles per season
- Building and routing cov/inter mechanicals, corrections, finalization
- Drafts contracts; code invoices; provide general department support.
- Communicates information/concepts/schedules to in/out of house contacts clearly and effectively, with Managers supervision
- Well-informed of creative solutions, artists in the industry, trends in design, bringing great ideas to projects assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Deep knowledge of the Adobe suite: Indesign, Photoshop, Illustrator
- Creative thinker with dynamic portfolio showing ideas and art/type executions
- Hand-lettering skills are preferred
- Effective communicator with good writing skills in order to communicate with clients and collegues.
Experience: Aware of book publishing, art trends, love of reading, cover design
