6. Job summary: The Development Manager works closely with the Director of Development, Head of Alumni Engagement and wider team to devise and implement regular giving and legacy fundraising activities to support the mission and strategic aims of St Hugh’s College. The role has responsibility for raising funds and increasing participation through multi-channel fundraising campaigns and appeals, as well as coordinating stewardship and impact reporting activities. The role will involve some evening and weekend working, for which time off in lieu is offered.

8. Background
St Hugh’s is one of the constituent colleges of the University of Oxford and is an independent, self-governing institution that is also a registered charity. Founded in 1886 to provide an excellent education to women who were otherwise excluded from the University, St Hugh’s is proud of its reputation for being a friendly, inclusive, and progressive community, and is committed to becoming the best employer in the collegiate University. One of the largest colleges in Oxford, there are around 1,000 students, more than 60 Fellows, over 50 lecturers working in a wide range of academic subjects, and a non-academic staff of 120 across all of the College’s support and administrative operations.
The College is run by the Governing Body, consisting of the Principal, 48 academic Fellows, and the senior officers of the College such as the Senior Tutor and the Bursar. The members of Governing Body are the Trustees of the charity and have ultimate responsibility for the governance and operations of the College, although much of this is delegated on a day-to-day basis to a number of key committees and officers.
The Development and Alumni Relations Office delivers alumni engagement and fundraising activities to support the College. There will be six full-time members of the team, including this role.
9. Main Responsibilities
Regular Giving programme management
o Plan and deliver the two-week annual telephone campaign with the aim of acquiring new donors, and encouraging increased and ongoing support from our alumni community.
o Work with the Data & Operations Officer to ensure there is adequate administrative support, including data collation, segmentation, and analysis.
o Develop and trial a giving day programme with outside suppliers.
o Work with the Director of Development and team to develop compelling print and digital appeals throughout the year with a view to retaining/upgrading current donors and acquiring new donors.
o Work closely with the Director of Development to build, cultivate, and seek support from a portfolio of donors and potential donors to make gifts in the range of c. £1,000 - £10,000 per year and secure legacy pledges through phone, email, events, and face-to-face meetings.
Legacy programme management
- Lead and deliver the legacy giving strategy, including mass appeals and individual approaches.
- Produce print and digital materials to raise awareness of the impact of legacies and assist alumni who wish to include the College in their legacy plans.
- Increase membership of the 1886 Society and work with team to deliver regular stewardship activities.
- Manage the administration of legacies, including internal and external liaison.
Stewardship
- Work with the Head of Alumni Engagement to deliver stewardship activities for regular donors and legators, including gift acknowledgments with support from the Development Officer, celebrating giving anniversaries, and impact reporting for specific and general appeals including student prizes.
- Monitor and prompt pledge reminders and recurring gift and pledge renewals.
- Work with Head of Alumni Engagement and Director of Development to create the annual Donor Impact Report and oversee the printing and distribution processes.
- Help to plan and attend donor stewardship events.
Operations
- Work with the Head of Alumni Engagement to support the improvement of the database’s data quality through the deployment of data enrichment activities such as surveys and lost alumni campaigns.
- Develop and produce reports as required on fundraising activity, results, and financial overviews.
- Ensure proper recording of data and gift updates in Raiser’s Edge and other systems.
- Work with Head of Alumni Engagement to maintain the ‘Alumni & Friends’ section of the College website in partnership with the wider team, with a particular focus on fundraising pages.
- To be responsible for the regular giving and legacy fundraising budget and resources.
- Attend College, donor and alumni events throughout the year as required.
Strategic development
- In consultation with the Director of Development and Head of Alumni Engagement, evaluate and develop the regular giving and legacy fundraising programmes to support the strategic aims of the College and Development Office engagement and fundraising goals.
- Support the Director of Development in the creation of fundraising proposals, gift agreements, cases for support and other fundraising materials.
- Keep up to date with regular giving and legacy trends, benchmarking, best practice, professional standards, regulations, and new approaches.
Other
- Other such duties relating to the work of the Development Office as may be assigned from time to time by the Development Director.
10. Selection criteria
Essential
- Educated to degree level or equivalent professional experience
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong organizational skills and experience of working in a busy office environment
- Significant experience of fundraising and an understanding of current regular giving and legacy best practice
- A proven ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines while maintaining careful attention to detail
- Experience of successfully meeting performance-related targets
- Team player who enjoys helping others to be successful and can also work effectively with minimal supervision
- Experience of working with a diverse range of people in a customer-oriented environment
- Confident and experienced at face-to-face networking and ability to talk and engage in conversation
- Professionalism, tact and discretion in dealing with others and an understanding of the requirements of working with personal and confidential data
- High level of IT literacy, particularly office software and video conference platforms
- An interest in fundraising and belief in higher education and the aims of the College
- Willingness to work outside of normal office hours when required to attend development events and donor meetings (time off in lieu will be given)
Desirable
- Experience of working in a higher education, marketing/sales, or events environment
- Past participation in or management of a telephone fundraising campaign
- Experience of using a database, particularly Raiser’s Edge or another CRM system
- Experience of producing print and digital content such as brochures, magazines, videos, photos, social media posts, etc.
- Understanding of GDPR, PECR, and tax-efficient charitable giving
- Understanding of the University of Oxford
